Hip-hop was well represented at the 2017 FYF Fest in Los Angeles, which featured Missy Elliott and Frank Ocean as headliners in addition electric sets from Anderson .Paak, Erykah Badu and A Tribe Called Quest.
All eyes was on Missy Elliott’s performance, her first U.S. show in about a decade. Elliott, who is 46, performed many of her biggest hits, including “Work It,” “The Rain,” “Hot Boyz,” and “Lose Control.”
Elliott’s set brought out the stars as well, with Beyonce, Katy Perry, Janet Jackson and Tyler the Creator on hand for the performance.
Saturday night the FYF Festival featured singer Frank Ocean, who brought out a wave of people for his wide-ranging set, which covered many of his hit songs, including “Good Guy,” “Thinkin’ Bout You” and “Pink and White.” Ocean, whose set also brought out the celebrities, including actor Brad Pitt, delivered a rousing version of the Carpenters/Stevie Wonder song “Close to You” as well.
One of the most memorable sets belonged to California-native Anderson .Paak, who recently got off tour in Europe with Bruno Mars.
Along with his band, The Free Nationals, .Paak took the crowd higher with his electric “Come Down,” off his Malibu album. .Paak also performed “Put, Me Thru,” “Carry Me” and “Lite Weight” off the Malibu album, in addition “Luh You,” from his Venice album.
Legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest took the crowd down memory lane by performing some of their classic songs, including “Bonita Applebum” and “Can I Kick It. Performing without recently deceased member Phife Dawg, the group made sure to pay tribute to their friend and collaborator on the song “Butter.”
Singer Erykah Badu, who never fails to impress, dazzled the crowd with songs from her catalog, including the fan-favorite “Me.” Other acts of note at the 2017 FYF Festival 6lack, Solange and Khelani.
