Keri Hilson isn’t taking lightly her influence among today’s youth.
The 27 year-old chart-topping R&B singer joined other celebrities recently in New York for a pep rally that offered students educational messages from public figures they admire. The pep rally, held as part of city’s “I Will Graduate Day,” also featured music, performances and a host of celebrity appearances.
“I take every opportunity to speak to the children,” Hilson said. “Education is so important. I use my platform to say ‘outside of what you see in the videos…yes I’m an entertainer, but I’m a real person as well.’ I have to handle my business. I have schedules to keep. I have to be punctual so I’m dependable and trustworthy. There’s so much learn about being an adult in school.”
On stage, Hilson stressed to students the importance of good attendance and being on time for school. "Show up even when you don't feel like it,” she said.
Hilson also discussed the business side of entertainment and how education is necessary. "You have to read contracts, documents, oversee your finances, she said. “Much of what I learned in school prepared me to manage my affairs today.”
