Michelle Obama delights the crowd in Harlem. |

More than 400 women packed a sweltering Harlem youth center recently for a close view of the talk of the country: Michelle Obama. To the crowd’s delight, Obama soon appeared on stage decked in a smooth black and white blouse and skirt, with pearls more reminiscent of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis than a “Southside girl from Chicago,” as Obama often refers to herself.
Obama was in Harlem to drum up support among New York’s women voters for her husband’s 2008 presidential campaign. New York is Hillary Clinton country as the former first lady represents the state in the Senate. But in a rare show of political support in New York for Barack Obama, several prominent local politicians invited Mrs. Obama to address the grassroots audience as part of the campaign’s Women for Obama initiative.
“We need women at our core,” Obama said. “We need women in Harlem. We need you in New York City. We are going to a make some change in the country.”
During her well-received speech, Obama discussed her modest upbringings in Chicago, her humorous first encounters with Barack, and why he should be the country’s next president.
“We get cynical and afraid that the world, as it is, is all we can hope for,” she said. “We can narrow the gap. This brother is for real. I am married to the answer.”
