Diddy to Post Obama Youth: “We Got to Step Our Game Up”
By CHRISTOPHER WINDHAM
Hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs worked diligently to help Barack Obama win the U.S. presidency.
Combs stumped for Obama at small rallies, where he also championed the importance of youth voting. He also discussed the presidential campaign on his hugely popular Diddy-Obama video blog, which featured Combs sharply criticizing John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate in one entry.
To mobilize his familiar hip-hop base, Combs led the crowd at the 2008 BET Awards in chant of "Obama or Die", a play off his “Vote or Die” get-out-the-youth-vote slogan from the 2004 election.
Given his leadership on youth voting, Human Nature asked Combs to offer any suggestions on what today’s youth should do differently in the initial stages of Obama’s presidency.
“I think one of the things we don’t do enough is take the time to enjoy certain things,” Combs told Human Nature. “I think we should enjoy the moment. We’ve been through so much as a race, as a people, as a generation. We should take the time to be able to enjoy it now because the bar has been raised and we got to step our game up.”
Combs marked the historic inauguration in D.C. with a pre-inauguration bash at a local night spot; a panel appearance at Pepsi’s “Refresh the World” symposium at Howard University; attendance at the top inaugural galas; media appearances and VIP seating at the President Obama’s swearing-in ceremony, where he offered a New York radio station live commentary.
Combs’ activism, and ease in navigating the Washington beltway scene, raises new questions about whether Combs could one day claim the title of the “hardest working man in politics.”
