Suicide Bombing Support
In a comprehensive survey of Muslim Americans, the Pew Research Center found a pattern of greater acceptance of suicide bombings by young Muslim Americans, who are more likely to hold that view than older Muslims. About 15% of Muslim Americans under age 30 compared to 6% of older Muslims reported that suicide bombings can sometimes be justified in defense of Islam.
The survey, which was derived from data collected from 1,050 Muslim Americans, said those reporting that suicide-bombing in defense of Islam is sometimes justified were also more likely to disbelieve that Arabs carried out the Sept. 11 attacks. Before you reach a conclusion, those findings don’t differ much from polls of Muslims in Great Britain, France, Germany and Spain. And surveys of Muslims in the Middle East do not show a greater tolerance for suicide bombing among young people. |
British Slave History Resurfaces
A British genealogy Web site has posted the first of 3 million names of slaves held by the British Empire and its colonies in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Ancestry.co.uk rolled out the collection with the Barbados Slave Register for 1834, which contains the names of 100,000 slaves and their owners from the former British colony. The site uses registers the British Government kept to monitor slave ownership and eradicate illegal slave trading. The registry contains about186,000 pages of names, which were lodged between 1815 and 1834. The site plans to release the names for slaves from other British colonies and territories, including Jamaica, The Bahamas and South Africa. Brace yourself for more Al Sharpton/Strom Thurmond-like shock. |
Legs Crossed for Peace
A group of wives and girlfriends of gang members from Pereira, Columbia went on a sex strike last year in protest of the growing violence in the city. Supported by the mayor’s office, the women said they will not have sex with mates until they give up the violence.
Pereira has one of the highest murder rates in Columbia, with a reported 97 murders for every 100,000 people. But after only 10 days the strike was called off. It’s unclear whether the strike had any impact on the violence. It’s also unclear whether it was the men or the women who were the scabs in this strike. |
What's in a Name?
There aren’t too many acronyms as well known as the NAACP. But as the organization approaches its 90th anniversary, some are calling on the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to change its name to appeal to a younger generation. To toss out a couple names, might we suggest one of the following:
NAAAD – National Association for the Advancement of the African Diaspora
NAAAP – National Association for the Advancement of All People NAPAA – National Advancement Project for African Americans AAAA – Association for the Advancement of African Americans NSBP – National Society of Black Progression.. (SEE USER POLL)
